Platform Engineer II
At Mollie, we’re on a mission to make payments and money management effortless for every business in Europe.
We started 20 years ago when we launched a more direct, affordable way for companies to get paid. That provided an alternative to the frustrating, overpriced solutions that banks offered at the time.
Today, we serve more than 250,000 businesses across Europe with an all-in-one solution that simplifies payments and money management. And we’re a 850-strong team of product, finance, support, commerce, and engineering specialists working across Europe – from Lisbon to London.
Your opportunity
As a Platform Engineer you will play a key role in improving the reliability and scalability of our financial platform and APIs. You will be joining the Database Engineering team, where we’re responsible for ‘crown jewels’ of the company, the data storage layer.
Our mission is simple: provide easy and reliable databases that scale. Easy for us to manage at scale, predictable for developers to use and reliable for the company to depend on.
What will you be doing
You will be working with us on shaping and improving our cloud-based database clusters that Mollie's financial products are built on. These products are used by tens of thousands of merchants on a daily basis.
As a platform engineer you work closely with our systems engineers and back-end engineers to ship new products with a software reliability engineering mindset, striking a balance between shipping often and maintaining a high level of scaling, system reliability, observability and security.
As we care for the reliability of our systems, you will be part of our team-wide on-call schedule that has a focus on actionable alerts and you will be empowered to make tough decisions in preventing alert fatigue.
You will also be pivotal in building infrastructure through Terraform, promoting repeatability, reliability, and ease of maintenance.
With many payments being performed on our platform every second of the day, system and database scalability are becoming increasingly important. Helping us build scalable products by thinking ahead will be an important part of your work.
Next to our existing APIs and dashboard, we are working on innovative financial solutions for our merchants. We are happy to share the details over a coffee, but it's safe to say we will put your skills to the test, allowing you to grow and learn rapidly.
Our architecture
We come from a monolithic background, with our core systems running on PHP, Java and MySQL. As our company started to scale up rapidly, we have scaled our infrastructure along with it by employing services oriented architecture, serverless architecture, and queueing systems. For current and future services, we use languages like Python and Go as well. All surrounding infrastructure tooling is written in Python, Go and Bash.
Our goal is to build our systems cloud-based, which enables us to leverage the latest technologies to keep scaling and upgrading our infrastructure.
What you will bring
A solid understanding and production experience with Terraform, Ansible and writing automation scripts in Python.
Some hands-on experience in administering (any flavour of) MySQL databases
Knowledge of concepts like replication, failover and disaster recovery in a distributed database environment.
A good understanding of data backup, recovery, security and integrity.
A proactive approach to solve issues in a way that can apply to our entire internal database product and reduces daily toil.
Production experience scaling fast growing databases and systems
Experience with tools for continuous integration or continuous deployment of applications
Experience dealing with large-scale applications is appreciated
A problem solving mentality during incidents to ensure quick-to-mitigate timeframes
Please apply with your CV in English
Kindly note that relocation support or visa sponsorship is not offered for this role.
